More and more ideas are sprouting up about how AI can be put to good use. Some people use it to write poetry or improve their business email writing skills. I, however, want to put an end to the tiresome task of creating shopping lists. And I want to do it all with the help of AI and Home Assistant.
My better half and I create a meal plan once a week and then use it to make a shopping list for the week’s shopping. We use a shared Google Calendar to write down the meal plan and the Bring! app as a shopping list. The good thing about this is that both can be integrated into Home Assistant.
The aim is to create a meal plan. Then, at the touch of a button, ChatGPT should automatically write the necessary ingredients into the Bring app. (Alternatively, a Home Assistant internal to-do list can be used).
I will not go into detail about how to integrate the Bring app or Google Calendar into Home Assistant or how to get ChatGPT up and running in Home Assistant. This article is solely intended to help you make your life easier with AI.
Here is a rough summary of the steps:
- Retrieve entries from the calendar
- Notify your smartphone what is planned to eat for the week (optional)
- Send the list of dishes to ChatGPT with the prompt to list the ingredients for these dishes
- Write the list to a variable
- Create a separate entry in the Bring! app for each line
You can find the code for this on my Patreon page.
Of course, you will need to check afterwards whether everything is correct and adjust the quantities if necessary. But at least you already have a list you can work with.
